Is Cosmetology Hard to Learn?

Of all the careers out there, from teachers to doctors to HVAC technicians, there is a vast degree of difficulty. Each career and educational path to get there comes with its own challenges, and cosmetology isn’t any different. And how difficult each career is will depend on the person’s abilities and aptitudes – someone who enjoys math would have a much harder time becoming a cosmetologist than someone who is more creatively inclined.

If you’re thinking of becoming a cosmetologist, but are worried about the difficulty of getting certified, here are some things to know and think about.

Are You a People Person?

Being a cosmetologist means that you’ll be spending time with and working with a variety of people. While you may earn return clients, a majority of the time you’ll be working with new people each day. If you enjoy meeting new people, getting to know them, and can make people feel comfortable easily, this will make the job and the training much easier.

Are You Creative?

Even though much of your education will be learning the basics and completing activities in a very “by-the-book” way, being creative and really being able to make things your own is going to make learning the job and doing it more enjoyable. And when you enjoy doing something it tends to be easier. And when there are more difficult lessons to learn, and there will be difficult lessons, it will be a fun challenge rather than frustrating.

Various Things You’ll Learn That Might Surprise People

There is a lot more to becoming a cosmetologist than learning how to cut and style hair. Part of learning the basics includes learning anatomy and physiology, you’ll learn safety and sanitation, color theory, the chemistry of mixing hair color, how to work with various beauty products, and more. While a large part of becoming a cosmetologist has to do with hairstyles and cutting techniques, there is a lot of science involved as well. This may sound intimidating, but know that the effort and studying you put into it will pay off in the end.

Education Doesn’t End When You Get Your License

Even when you get your cosmetology license, your education doesn’t end there. In the state of Texas, cosmetologists are required to renew their license every two years. And as part of renewing your license, you are required to complete four hours of continuing education. This can be completed through cosmetology online license renewal courses, attending a tradeshow, a seminar, and more. This will ensure that you’re up-to-date on all the latest techniques and newest styles.
