What to Know About Being a Cosmetologist?

If you’re interested in becoming a cosmetologist, but want to learn more before you enroll in school and spend months preparing, CosmoTraining is here to help! We are passionate about this industry and love being able to help potential cosmetologists learn more about the field.

Here are some things you should know about becoming and being a cosmetologist.

Graduate From an Accredited School

If you’re diving in and are ready to research which school and program best fits your goals, take your time deciding. There are dozens of options out there, so look for one that offers you the best opportunity for finding a job after graduation.

An accredited school will be sure to prepare you for the real world of being a cosmetologist, ensuring that you are skilled at all of the necessary techniques, that you follow industry standards and practices, and that you will be able to pass the final licensing examination. Most cosmetology schools require 1,000 hours of practice among various fields, including general cosmetology, hair cutting, styling, and coloring, nail care, skin care, makeup application, and salon management. Each school has different requirements, however, so be sure to research carefully so you know what to expect.

Understand Essential Skill Sets

A cosmetologist is essentially an artist, and those skills can take a lot of time and effort to fine-tune. Among artistic abilities, being a cosmetologist also requires:

  • Stamina and Dexterity: Most cosmetologists spend their days on their feet, whether you’re working in a typical hair salon or as a wedding stylist. You will also need to effectively work with various tools at the same time, such as scissors, brushes, hairdryers, and hair clips. If you’re tired and dropping your tools throughout a session, that client may not come back to you again.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Customer service is essential in being a successful cosmetologist. You need to be able to welcome someone into the salon, make them feel comfortable while you’re working, and even help them make decisions. A great experience for the client means they are more likely to become a repeat customer.
  • Creativity: When someone comes in and starts describing what they want, will you have the vision to make it happen? A cosmetologist should have the knowledge and skill to take what they know and apply it to their client’s facial structure.
  • Product Knowledge: Color, shampoo, and conditioner, how certain products respond to different hair types – this is all product knowledge and it’s important to have this at your fingertips when necessary.

What Do Cosmetologists Do?

There are various opportunities you can pursue as a cosmetologist. You can become a hairstylist, nail technician, salon or spa manager, beautician, wedding or event stylist, makeup artist, or even an esthetician — although this may require additional education. When you have the necessary skills and licensing, and when you spend some time working, you can decide if you want to go in a certain direction and continue your education as a cosmetologist, or you may even decide you want to teach cosmetology.

Day-to-day, a cosmetologist will schedule appointments, cut clients’ hair, mix and apply color, style hair for special events, work with families and young children, as well as do general maintenance of the salon such as cleaning. The fun thing about being a cosmetologist is that no two days are the same. You’re always working on different people and applying your skills in different ways.
